MURDER squad detectives today made a second arrest in the hunt for the killers of disabled dad Eddie Maddick, pictured.

Police working on the high-profile Operation Erskine inquiry confirmed a 21-year-old man had been arrested at an address in Southampton this morning.

He was in custody being quizzed in connection with the death of father-of-two Mr Maddick, who was found dead from head injuries on a Southampton footpath on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile a 20-year-old man arrested in Southampton on Wednesday afternoon was still being questioned after police obtained a custody extension from city magistrates this morning.

Disabled Mr Maddick, who suffered from epilepsy, had spent Saturday evening at pubs in the Shirley High Street area with a close circle of friends.

The 45-year-old was caught on CCTV cameras at 1.30am just before he entered a dark footpath leading from Tebourba Way into William Macleod Way at Millbrook.

Police believe he met his attackers minutes later but his body was not found until 9.15am the following morning.

A post mortem confirmed unemployed builder Mr Maddick, who had to give up work due to his medical confdition, had died from severe injuries to his head and upper body.

Earlier this week, his devastated family made a public appeal for information to catch his killers.

Distraught Caroline Maddick, 43, his wife of nearly 25 years, told a press conference: "My greatest regret is that I was not there when he needed me most.

"But I will keep fighting for him. I will see justice for him. He did not deserve to die, let alone in the manner he did."

Police urgently need to trace everyone who used the footpath between 1am and 3am on Sunday. Call the Operation Erskine team on 0845 045 4545.
