JOE WRIGHT gave up the sport nine years ago - but the break has obviously done him no harm as this reborn bowler yesterday reached the third round of the Southampton Open singles.

The Fleming Park player, who returned to the green this season, overcame Raj Kapur 21-18.

Wright is still going strong in the triples too and he teamed up with the Barrett brothers Mick and Jim from Eastleigh Rail to outgun Charlie Bumstead of Pirelli General and his partners 27-12.

However, Mick Barrett's singles hopes disappeared with a 21-18 loss to Middlesex's Steve Barton.

Richard Shelley and Chummy Poree have won the triples twice.

This year they have been joined by Kent Middleton Cup star Martyn Sekjer and together they edged past South African visitor Mervyn Conway and associates 15-12 in a tense finish.
