NEWPORT striker Steve Tate has turned down a move to Lymington & New Milton.
Although frontline competition is going to be hotter than ever at St George's Park following the arrival of player-coach Guy Whittingham, Tate has informed manager Tony Mount that he wants to stay and fight for his place with the newly-promoted Dr Martens Premier club.
"I think that's the end of the story," said Mount. "Lymington made an offer that was acceptable to us and I gave them permission to speak to the player, but Steve has informed me that he's turned them down.
"Nothing's cast in stone, but if Steve wants to stay then it's fine by me. He was outstanding last season and played a key part in getting us promoted. He's got a great attitude."
Tate's decision could have a knock-on effect for Salisbury City, who are keen to entice master marksman Leigh Phillips away from Lymington.
Although Linnets boss Graham Kemp does not want to stand in Phillips' way of playing at a higher level, he would only consider selling him if he had a quality replacement lined up. Tate, formerly of Waterlooville, Havant and Weymouth, would fit the bill perfectly.
Said Kemp: "Steve would bring a massive amount of professional to the club and it's no secret that we would love to sign him."
Brockenhurst's Stuart Hussey is back from a three-day trial with Conference outfit Yeovil.
New signing Mick Mullins was on target as Eastleigh drew 2-2 with Poole Town at Ten Acres.
Brian Green was also on target. Taku Omoto and Gary Fletcher scored for Poole.
Tonight's fixtures: Lymington & New Milton v Weymouth, Worthing v Farnborough.
