EDUCATION organisations in Eastleigh are taking a lead to try to encourage trained teachers back into the classroom.
Eastleigh Borough Council, in conjunction with Education Personnel Services, has set up a series of recruitment fairs aimed at encouraging teachers back to work in schools.
Among more than 80 who attended the first, many already had the necessary teaching skills. Some are now applying for places at local schools, while others who need to brush up skills are attending special courses.
Explains Sue Dornon, recruitment strategy manager at Education Personnel services: "We have not been able to do what many other counties have done and attract teachers from other parts of the UK because the high cost of Hampshire housing puts people off moving here.
"We therefore decided to target trained teachers already in the county who had left the profession for one reason or another."
The Eastleigh prosperity team, led by former teacher Councillor Margaret Kyrle, provided immediate support.
Cllr Kyrle said: "A lack of teachers could have massive repercussions on our children. A good teacher will inspire children to achieve more, producing the entrepreneurs who will secure Hampshire's future.
"We were delighted to support these recruitment fairs and help tackle the teacher shortage."
