With light south/south westerly winds force 2, occasionally 3 and a beautiful summers day, the folkboat fleet started in Bouldnor Bay with a short beat up to Kingston & Grist with Stralende (Blachford) and Madeline (Donald) taking an early lead, hotly pursued by Tim (Chandler), Milly (Webb) and current National Champion Cloud Cuckoo (Stork).
The fleet then fetched up to Black Rock against the tide, rounding in the same order, but with Madeline experiencing problems with her kite, Tim, Cloud Cuckoo and Milly managed to catch up.
By the time the fleet reached Jacksons, Stralende had slightly extended the lead, with Cloud Cuckoo moving up to third just behind Madeline. The fleet then split tacks with half deciding to head straight ensure, despite being headed away from Wadworths, whilst the others decided to attempt to gain by hoping to be lee bowed by the tide and "crab" across to Wadworths.
Those who went inshore first eventually paid off and pulled Blue Mist (Case) and Woodpecker (Turner) into fourth and fifth respectively whilst Cloud Cuckoo slipped back to seventh. After long and painful tacking inshore against the tide, the final results were Stralende (Blachford), Madeline (Donald), Milly (Webb), Woodpecker (Turner), Blue Mist (Case) out of 9 boats.
Sunday saw a postponement whilst the fleet (now increased to 12) waited for the wind to fill in. Entertainment was provided by Ed Donald in Madeline who ran aground and sent his crew overboard to prize the boat off and Tim Chandler who accidentally fell overboard when attempting to recover his thermos!! Racing got underway with a windward laid mark, Black Rock and Jacksons being the course.
Once again Stralende took the lead with Madeline and Webb hot on his heels. Stralende lead the fleet down to Jacksons, where Cloud Cuckoo managed to pull away from Milly in an attempt to catch the two leaders. Lessons had been learnt from yesterday and the majority of the fleet headed inshore to get out of the tide and commencing the tacking battles up the island shore to the finish. Places were won and lost on flucky lifts and damaging headers as the wind deflected off the shore.
Stralende just managed to hold Madeline off and took his second first and the Burnett Cup, whilst Madeline finished second overall and Cloud Cuckoo held on to third place.
An excellent, albeit testing weekend for all - perfect practice for the Nationals in two weeks time.
Overall results: 1st Stralende (T Blachford), 2nd Madeline (E Donald), 3rd Cloud Cuckoo (J Stork), Milly (R Webb), 5th Woodpecker (B Turner).
