ANDOVER recently staged its annual pro-am with the Hants PGA on Friday, 13 July, and it was certainly not an unlucky day for the winner, Scott Shibley, despite missing out on the chance of setting a new course record after three- putting the final green.
Shibley, the assistant professional from the Army Golf Club, won the individual event with a two under par 68 to equal the professional course record set three years ago by home professional Derrick Lawrence and a five-shot victory over Barton-on-Sea's David Ford, with Mark Williamson from Paulton's Golf Centre a further shot back on 74.
Shibley was playing in the tournament, sponsored by Langdowns Accountants and T&S Roofing Contractors, before travelling to Lancashire for final qualifying for the British Open at Lytham St. Anne's. Unfortunately, he was unable to recapture the same form he had shown at Andover and missed out on qualifying for this year's Open.
The pro-am team event was won by Stoneham pro Ben Johnson with his team of Joe Winnington, Warren Tarrant and Peter Scott, with Andover club captain Roy Wilson also a member of the team that finished second with David Kennedy, Paul Batchelor and Shibley. Results were as follows:
Individual scores: 1st Scott Shibley (The Army) 68; 2nd David Ford (Barton-on-Sea) 73; 3rd Mark Williamson (Paultons Golf Centre) 74; 4th James Ablett (Alresford) 75; 5th Finlay Young (Royal Winchester) 75; 6th Daryl Parlour (South Winchester) 75; 7th Ben Johnson (Stoneham) 75.
Team scores: 1st Ben Johnson, Joe Winnington, Warren Tarrant, Peter Scott 129; 2nd Scott Shibley, David Kennedy, Roy Wilson, Paul Batchelor 130; 3rd James Black, Andrew Kemp, James Corrs, Greg King 130; Justin Sandler, Simon Quantick, Roger Stevens, Kevin Tobin 131
Andover club captain Roy Wilson celebrated his recent birthday with a fine home win against Alton, teaming up with big-hitting Kenneth Harley to finish convincing 6&5 winners. There were also big wins for Robert Drake and Warren Tarran (5&4) and Roy Maloney and Lloyd Bale (4&3) whilst Martin Bennet and Neil Davis also played well to win 2&1 and Peter Scott and Mark Gates generously prevented a whitewash for Alton by gaining a half in their match.
Results: Roy Wilson (14) and Kenneth Harley (10) beat Colin Brassington (12) and Tony Michalski (17) 6&5.; Roy Maloney (15) and Lloyd Bale (5) beat Geoff Sykes (10) and Chris Smyth (19) 4&3; Martin Bennet (8) and Neil Davis (9) beat Mike Ilsley (13) and Mike Lake (20) 2&1; Robert Drake (3) and Warren Tarrant (9) beat Rob Keogh (14) and Pat Osborn (17) 5&4; Mark Gates (10) and Peter Scott (5) halved with Dennis Porter (11) and Willie Quail (13)

Andover Ladies have enjoyed this season's inter-club away matches but unfortunately have yet to record a win. Their latest match against Newbury was held in perfect conditions and captain Margaret Ashley and her partner Sarah Bulpitt managed to square their game on the 16th only to finally lose on the last hole. It was a similar story for Liz Paul and Liz Eames and the pairings of Angela Rogers and Ann Bennet and Kath Somerton and Lesley Compton, who suffered a similar fate. In their next outing away to Fleming Park, Andover lost again but the ladies were jubilant following their 3-2 win in their annul match against the club's seniors. Ladies captain Margaret Ashley partnered by Audrey Welfare played against the seniors' captain Nigel Cluett and Ralph Richardson and in a very close game the ladies, ahead after the first nine holes, eventually squared the match with the winning putt coming from the captain on the 18th green. Norah Richardson, who partnered newcomer Audrey Marshall, was unlucky on the 18th when her second shot found the greenside bunker and, despite a good shot, the win was secured for the seniors by Clive Broughton and Bob Stock. It was husband against wife in the third match with June Marks, partnered by Liz Eames, playing against Tony Marks and Les Parfitt, and again the ladies were the victors . It was a similar story with Lesley Compton and Pam Moore beating Chris Bown and Mike Mills and in the final match the seniors pairing of Peter Kennet and newcomer David Marshall just beat Doreen Broughton and Ruby Cairns. There have also been successes at various open meetings for some of the Andover ladies with Audrey Welfare gaining an excellent win at Southampton with 38 Stableford points and Liz Paul winning the nearest the pin prize whilst at Ampfield Mary Fluen won first prize for the best score in the morning round.
