Big Brother & The Holding Company, The Brook, Southampton
NO TIME for a sound check but miracles ensued as usual.
No Janis Joplin, either - but BB&THC were never just about Joplin.
Current singer Lisa Mills gave a stunning performance beginning with Down On Me and Combination of the Two.
The whole band played their part with veteran members Pete Albin, Sam Andrew and Dave Getz, along with amazing young guitarist Bill Ganaye, really got it on on numbers producing a mesmeric mix of rock, funk and blues. The "Brook roar" was never louder than at the end of the evening, after Lisa and Company had thrilled with a sensational version of Summertime, and raucous closers Piece Of My Heart and Ball And Chain.
Gig of the year? Could well be.
