HUNDREDS of sports teams flocked to Southampton at the weekend for the annual Asian Games.
And it was a local club who came out tops in the hockey event at the Bassett arena - Sabha Sports claimed the main hockey cup in an overall event which attracted teams from as far afield as Birmingham, Leeds and London.
The aim of the Asian Games, organised by the Singh Sabha Gurdwara, is to unite a variety of standards and sports including football, cricket, hockey and kabaddi - a point-based tag game with eight players. The two teams of four have 30 seconds to tag their opponent before moving back to their own area.
Now in its 12th year one of the main organisers of the Southampton games, Tara Virdi was pleased with the outcome. He said: "It was a great day. We try to encourage youngsters off the streets and into sport. We also encourage Asian youngsters to come into sports."
