CHEESED-off pranksters have brought smiles to the faces of motorists passing Southampton's controversial new statue.
The £80,000 Shear, branded a giant cheese grater by critics, was unveiled earlier this month near Thomas Lewis Way in Bevois Valley.
Jokers have now placed an authentic grater in the shadow of the ten-metre structure.
The artwork, funded by regeneration cash, is based on a giant sword used by Southampton's mythical hero Sir Bevis.
Far from being annoyed at the prank, city council chiefs have given the go-ahead for the cheese grater to remain where it is.
Councillor Paul Jenks, chairman of the regeneration partnership, said: "I was actually asked by council officers whether we should get it removed, but I said no.
"You've got to have a sense of humour about these things.
"It's not vandalism and it's not causing damage. It has got a certain style about it so I'm happy to leave it there."
Motorist Sue Flooks, from West End, drives past the statue every day on her way to work.
She said: "I actually like the statue, but I did think it was hilarious seeing the cheese grater - it's absolutely brilliant.
"Someone has got a good imagination."
