DETECTIVES investigating the death of a 38-year-old woman in Winchester today revealed she had been stabbed.

A post mortem showed she had died from a stab wound following an incident at 80-86 Sussex Street late on Saturday night.

A 30-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, from the same address, were arrested Sunday evening, and are being held on suspicion of murder.

The woman is being held in Winchester and the man is being held in Alton.

A forensic team spent yesterday at the Winchester City Council-run property, which is divided into 26 self-contained bedsits.

Officers conducted a fingertip search and sifted through rubbish at the block in an effort to piece together what happened.

A neighbour said he returned from a night out to find the street full of police.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: "I came home around midnight.

"The place was crawling with police cars and officers.

"I only moved in a week ago so I didn't have a clue what was going on."

Detective Chief Inspector Ray Webb said door-to-door enquiries into the death were being carried out.

He told the Daily Echo: "I can confirm that a murder investigation is under way after we were called to the flat to investigate a disturbance.

"At the moment our main concern is tracing the family of the woman.Until then we cannot disclose her identity.

"No-one is in custody at the moment.

"Our objective is to get as many people who can help with our inquiries interviewed as soon as possible.

"A team of 30 officers are already involved with inquiries relating to the incident."
