Shirley Bassey, Somerley House, Ringwood, Friday 13th July
The minute she walks in the joint you can see she's a girl of distinction. And what a joint Shirley Bassey will be walking into tonight, when she graces a specially-constructed stage in the grounds of Somerley House near Ringwood.
For Shirl the Girl, the waif from the wrong side of the tracks, even visiting a stately home would have seemed an impossible dream when she was growing up in Cardiff's tough Tiger Bay.
Today she dines with princes and performs in palaces. She's an international superstar with a 24-carat gold jet-set life-style. She even has a warehouse to store her glamorous gowns in.
Although she is now in her 60s, Shirley Bassey has been an international star for more than 40 years.
She first rose to stardom in the late Fifties and early Sixties, gaining a reputation as an electrifying performer.
Amazingly, she shows no signs of slowing down and is more popular today than ever with a loyal following who know that her act simply oozes pure class.
A consummate performer who can wring every last drop of emotion out of a performance and leave her audiences begging for more, she has a big voice and an even bigger personality.
She can do wonders with almost any song but her best-loved tunes are still her Bond film themes, Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever, and bold, brassy numbers like Big Spender.
Fans are sure to get them all tonight, plus a marvellously varied programme that shows the Tigress from Tiger Bay still has them roaring for more.
Some tickets, priced £27.50, may still be available. Call Tickemaster on 0870 900 9933 or the BIC box office on 01202 456456.
