POLICE have charged two schoolgirls with stealing £800 worth of jewellery from a cart in a Southampton shopping centre after CCTV footage was published in the Daily Echo.

The pair were due to appear before Southampton Youth Court today to face allegations of theft from the city's Marlands Centre.

Police arrested the girls, aged 13 and 16, on Sunday. Both have subsequently been charged with the theft of jewellery on May 23.

The move followed an appeal on the Daily Echo's Crimewatch page last week, featuring photographs taken from security cameras on the top floor of the Marlands.

Police said the arrests came as a result of calls received from people who had seen the article and phoned in with information.

PC Mike Florit, of Southampton police's town centre unit, said: "We are extremely grateful to everyone who has come forward."

The result is the latest in a long line of CCTV success stories where the Daily Echo has published CCTV stills on behalf of Hampshire police.
