A THIRD scheme to ensure children in Southampton get the best start in life is planned for the city.
Sure Start, the government initiative for children from birth to four years old, is set to start in the Redbridge and Millbrook areas.
The scheme, which draws together improved education, health, family support and other services, already operates successfully in Weston - and a programme for the city centre is planned.
City council regeneration boss Councillor Paul Jenks said: "I am delighted that our successful record of working with parents and local communities to deliver better services for children and their families has been recognised by the government and they have asked us to submit a third expression of interest."
The outline bid is due to be submitted in the autumn with the hope that the project can start at the beginning of next year.
The Weston scheme is one of the first in the country to have its own purpose-built centre.
It provides advice on children's development, training for parents, a health service, antenatal and baby clinic as well as play sessions.
Christine Hammond, of Southampton Voluntary Services, said: ""We look forward to the development of the scheme."
