HAMPSHIRE TV wildlife expert Chris Packham has launched a survey to answer the question: Why did the hedgehog cross the road?
A census is being carried out to see just how the species' population is evolving in Britain today.
Volunteers are being asked to record how many hedgehogs and other animals they see on journeys of at least 20 miles.
Chris Packham said: "Hedgehogs are unique among mammals, and this survey will be vital in ensuring we can conserve them for the future. It is also a great opportunity for motorists to get involved and do their bit for wildlife."
Hedgehogs, once common in the countryside, are now believed to be in decline. Pesticides have destroyed their food supply, and loss of their habitat means they have fewer places to nest.
Organised by Mammals Trust UK the survey takes place until September.
