The Clandestine Marriage, RAODS, Plaza Theatre, Romsey

THE intrigue behind this comedy of manners is declared in its title, and the plot twists every which way. It's a pleasure to see such pieces performed and this production, a first attempt at this genre for RAODS, had peaks of success.

The excellent Albie Minns, as Lord Ogleby, created a lecherous old rogue, frantically besotted by the bewitching Fanny, played with perfect clarity by Michelle Cogswell McGrath.

His nephew, the equally-infatuated Sir John Melvil, well-played by Mike Slater, was originally betrothed to her sister. Add a father who could bore for England about his home improvements and the scene is set for satirical subterfuge.

Although needing more depth in direction, this production had an impressive set, slick changes and splendid costumes.
