WITH foot and mouth restrictions in the New Forest lifted at last, Crabwood CC officials were able to complete what should have been a series of four road races on Beaulieu Heath.
In reality it was only the second, but while some other promoters are planning to stage postponed events later in the year this won't be possible for the races lost in this instance now that the long summer evenings are beginning to shorten.
The final race in this year's series will be remembered as the one Southampton traithlete, Julian Jenkinson (Tri UK) gave the judges an easy task of identifying the winner. The 58-kilometre distance hasn't been far enough to split the field more often than not in the past, but Jenkinson took flight on his own after 30 kilometres to time trial his way to victory, cruising across the finishing line at the top of the hill by Ferny Crofts with 1minute 10 seconds to spare.
That gentle climb became a little more congested in the sprint for second place, won by Phil Harvey (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) from Russell Page (SP Systems Wightlink RT) whose son, Keiran, the new British junior 25-mile champion, changed disciplines from road to track in his preparations for this year's world championships by finishing runner-up to Olympic medallist, Chris Newton (Pinarello RT) in the points race at an international meeting in Cardiff.
The warm, if somewhat, sultry conditions of the past few days have enabled many time trialists of all abilities to improve their personal times.
Hampshire-born Ray Hughes (Clarence Wheelers) topped the result boards of the Poole Wheelers 25 for veterans in Dorset and the West London CA 30 between Alton and Farnham with times of 51.0 and 1.3.45 and Claire Newman (Crabwood CC) was a double winner too, as fastest woman in 1.02 and 1.16.51.
