A HAMPSHIRE couple has launched a campaign to get a traffic calming scheme in a busy Eastleigh road altered because they claim the measures are dangerous.

The move by Adrian and Kim Cotton of Hamilton Road, Bishopstoke, follows a recent accident which landed 31-year-old scooter rider Kim in hospital. She was turning left out of Cranbury Road into Derby Road when her scooter and a double-decker bus collided head on.

Now, the couple are claiming that traffic-calming road markings force vehicles - especially large ones - on to the wrong side of the road and need to be reassessed.

Mum of three, Kim, suffered a broken elbow, concussion and severe bruising in the accident which also wrote off her new scooter which had less than 200 miles on the clock.

But after visiting the scene of the accident her husband said: "I noticed that vehicles, especially large ones, swing out to the other side of the road because of the traffic calming. Just before they get to where the road pinches they have to come out about ten feet.

"I'm all for traffic calming but I think this layout is dangerous. How long will it be before a kiddie on a pushbike is involved in an accident?"

Now, 35-year-old Mr Cotton says he intends to contact Eastleigh council and lobby Eastleigh MP David Chidgey. He has appealed for anyone who supports the campaign or who saw his wife's accident to contact him.

Mrs Cotton said: "I remember turning left out of Cranbury Road and Derby Road was clear on my side. Then I don't remember anything until I was in hospital."

An Eastleigh council spokesman said: "All complaints and injury accidents are noted and plotted on our borough map system. We also liaise closely with the police on traffic issues and these issues are constantly reviewed."
