A POLICE investigation is under way today after an elderly man was killed and his wife injured when they were hit by a car on a Hampshire road.
Fredrick Cooper and his wife are believed to have been struck by a F-registration blue Renault 5 car.
The 71-year old was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, by paramedics but was later pronounced dead.
His 78-year-old wife, who has not been named, was taken to hospital suffering from serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The couple, from Hayling Island, were crossing Portsdown Hill Road on their way to the Royal Armouries Museum at Fort Nelson in Fareham when it is thought the car collided with them as they were crossing the road at 11.20am yesterday.
Investigating officer Sgt Cleaven Faulkner said: "We believe the couple were crossing the road having parked their car in the public car park to the museum on the opposite side of the road.
"We are appealing for witnesses to the accident to piece together events or anyone who saw the blue Renault before the incident happened."
He said: "The driver of the car did stop after the accident and has been interviewed. No arrests have been made at this stage and investigations are continuing."
The driver of the car, an 86-year-old man from Gosport, was with a female passenger and was travelling from Down End Road in Portchester when the accident happened.
Sgt Faulkner said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw the car before the time of the accident, even the most insignificant sighting could help us with our inquiries."
