MORE than 150 sportsmen and women from the Isle of Wight took part in the opening ceremony of the Island Games last night.
The competitors representing the Island have travelled to the Isle of Man, hosts for the ninth Island Games.
The opening ceremony, which included a huge fireworks display, was attended by the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, and his wife Sophie. It was held at the island's National Sports Centre athletics stadium.
As many as 22 teams are taking part in the event, which was held on the Isle of Wight last year.
During the opening events the Isle of Wight scooped two medals, both bronze - by Chris Volley in the triathlon and by their clay pigeon shooting team.
