JASON LEWRY claimed career-best match figures of 13-79 as Sussex sent neighbours Hampshire crashing to their first championship defeat of the season by an innings and 13 runs at Hove on Saturday.

The left-arm swing bowler from Worthing grabbed a hat-trick in his opening over on the way to taking 7-42 as Hampshire, 221 behind on first innings, were routed for 108 by mid-afternoon on the second day.

It allowed Sussex to storm to their fourth win in the last five games.

Lewry's hat-trick was the first at Hove for 20 years it marked a sensational start to the Hampshire innings.

In humid conditions, Lewry struck first by having Derek Kenway caught at short leg with his third ball.

He then trapped Will Kendall and skipper Robin Smith leg before with full-length deliveries.

James Kirtley later bowled Giles White off-stump for five before Lewry, who is out of contract at the end of the season, grabbed his fourth victim as Dimitri Mascarenhas was caught in the gully for seven.

Lewry grabbed three more wickets in the space of four balls in his following over, Neil Johnson being caught at the wicket and Adrian Aymes lbw before Alex Morris had his off stump knocked back.

Ninth-wicket pair, Shaun Udal (40no) and Chris Tremlett (10), took Hampshire side past their paltry first innings total by putting on 47 in eight overs before Kirtley had Tremlett brilliantly caught at second slip by skipper Chris Adams.

Southampton-born pace man Billy Taylor drove the final nail into his native county's coffin by having last man Alan Mullally caught at mid-on with only his second delivery after replacing Lewry at the sea end.

Uncapped Michael Yardy earlier complied a career best 87 not out as the hosts batted on for 95 minutes to make 302.

The 20-year-old left-hander celebrated the award of a new two-year contract by hitting nine boundaries in his patient 193-ball knock.

Yardy, whose previous best score of 75 not out was made against Hampshire at West End earlier this season, shared in a last wicket stand of 66 in 20 overs with Taylor.

Taylor, a last-minute replacement for the injured Mark Robinson, had occupied the crease for 77 minutes in making a career-best 11 when Mascarenhas had him caught at slip.

Hampshire were made to suffer by the last pair after Kirtley and Lewry were sent back in the first five overs of the day.

Kirtley was caught at the wicket rocking back defensively to Mullally before Lewry skied Morris to short mid-wicket.
