THIS is the amazing picture of last night's lunar eclipse over Southampton.

It was taken at about 9.15pm in Bitterne Triangle, and showed that the predicted-cloudy skies failed to black out the views of the South's skywatchers.

Stargazers from across the South got their wish as cloud cover failed to prevent people catching a glimpse of the first total eclipse of the Moon this century.

The eclipse - a portent of doom in ancient times - began at 6.42pm, when the Moon started to enter the Earth's shadow.

Over the next hour, as the shadow crept across the face of the Moon, it changed colour until it was blood red.

John Thompson, secretary of Southampton Astronomical Society, said: "It was better than we expected after the weather forecast. It was good."
