THE Hampshire Branch of the British Red Cross is appealing for new and second hand toys for its Fire Victim Support Vehicle.

The modern motor-home, run by highly-trained volunteers, attends house fires with the fire and rescue service, taking in uninjured householders and their pets. Although able to offer both practical and emotional support to adults, Red Cross volunteers often find that children prefer a teddy to cuddle when they are upset.

Alan Fryer, the Fire Victim Support Service co-ordinator, said: "Families are understandably distraught at seeing their homes go up in flames, and trying to pacify a crying, frightened child is extremely difficult if you are upset too.

"However, we have found that children can often be temporarily distracted by giving them teddy bears to cuddle or games to play, which in turn gives their parents time to calm down and think through the practicalities.'

The Fire Victim Support Service can also make use of clean baby clothes, tinned and packet food. In addition, items such as toothbrushes, soaps and flannels are useful for 'comfort packs'.

Collection or drop-off items can be arranged by calling Alan Fryer on (01962) 865174.
