REPAIRS to stop an historical bastion slipping away could cost up to £10,000.
A 50-metre section of the ramparts at No. 1 Bastion off Haslar Road, Gosport, began to collapse in November, after rain saturated the bank.
Although the movement stopped after a week, if reconstruction is not carried out, there is a real possibility of further deterioration at the site, part of the Gosport Lines earthwork defences built around 1801.
In a report to Gosport Borough Council's health and leisure committee, officers have recommended that up to £10,000 be set aside for the work needed to save the ramparts.
A study will take place into how unstable the area is. Council officers and English Heritage would then be able to budget for repairs to the listed monument.
The committee is set to consider the report when it meets next Monday.
