POLICE have arrested a man after a teenager was allegedly assaulted in Southampton on New Year's Eve.

They swooped after a 19-year-old said she was assaulted in Sholing on Sunday evening.

The teenager said the attack took place between 7.30pm and 8pm near the junction of Cleethorpes Road and North East Road.

She told police that she was on her way to meet friends for a New Year's Eve party when a man approached her.

She said she was assaulted by the man but managed to flee after she pushed him off.

Police arrested a 31-year-old, from the Southampton area, yesterday afternoon in connection with the incident.

An appeal for witnesses to the alleged attack on the teenager, who is from Bitterne, has now been launched.

Detective constable Stephen White, from Bitterne CID, said: "She was very upset and shaken-up.

"We are looking for any witnesses who saw a female being attacked in North East Road at that time of night or anyone who may have seen a female looking upset.

"After she pushed him off she ran away and called us that night immediately afterwards. We are hopeful that people may have been going out to parties at the time and driven or walked past.

"We are particularly keen for two men who may have seen the female looking upset on Bursledon Road to come forward."

Anyone with information should telephone Bitterne CID on 0845 045 4545.
