THE DRIVER of a car which left the road in a bizzare accident is in a critical condition after undergoing brain surgery yesterday.

The accident happened on the A27, near the Segensworth roundabout, Fareham.

The driver, said by police to be a civil servant aged 35 who lives in London, was freed from the vehicle - a Suzuki Vitara - by Hampshire firefighters.

He was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, but later transferred to Southampton General Hospital's neurological unit for surgery.

Police said he was hit on the head by a wooden fence post which came through the windscreen when the vehicle left the road. It is believed he was overtaking another car at the time and lost control.

The unidentified driver had an operation at Southampton after last Thursday's crash. It happened at about midday. The victim's parents live in Gosport.

Four passengers in the car were released after treatment for minor injuries at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The passengers included a man aged 61, from Bognor Regis, a man aged 32, from Arundel, the driver's girlfriend, aged 34, from London, and a boy, aged six, from Arundel. All the passengers and the driver's parents are keeping a bedside vigil.
