TARIQ SASSO, the 15-year-old judo phenomenon from Calmore, is preparing for a busy 2001 with an international tournament in Rotterdam and the possibility of a place at the European Youth Olympics in the summer.

Having been invited to the Great Britain cadet youth squad after winning a bronze medal at the GB junior championships, Sasso (pictured) is now eligible for selection to the GAB squad that will compete at the European Youth Olympics in Spain next July.

In order to be selected for such a prestigious event, the rising starlet must increase his training regime to enable him to enter national and international tournaments and to attend a number of training camps. This vigorous programme will begin once the Christmas celebrations are out the way with an international tournament in Rotterdam as well as the first of these GB training camps, taking place in January.

Successful participation in such events could well mean a call up to the GB Youth Olympic squad and ultimately place this bright young prospect in contention for a place at the World Olympics in 2004.

Since starting to fight competitively six years ago, Sasso has been successful in 76 of the 99 tournaments he has entered, hopefully he will be able to continue this trend at increasingly greater heights.
