POINT-TO-POINT racing in the Sandhurst area begins on Sunday January 7.

As usual, Tweseldown stages the opening meeting of the national season which runs until early June.

This will be the only race meeting at Tweseldown, the remaining four Sandhurst area fixtures will be at Hackwood Park Basingstoke, one at Badbury Rings and a fourth at Larkhill.

There is also a meeting at Peper Harrow near Farnham on May 5.

The recent wet conditions had at least been frost free to enable more horses than usual to be ready to run early on and big fields are expected at Tweseldown.

In spite of recent torrential rain, the course is raceable at the time of writing. "The track is in very good heart," said manager Paul Cabrol.

"The drainage work we have carried out is paying dividends now."

This early meeting has a history of throwing up a top class horse.

Two years ago, subsequent Cheltenham winner Castle Mane made his seasonal debut at Tweseldown, and last year, after travelling from Scotland, Balisteros won 10 races and became the champion point-to-pointer.
