A FORMER Daily Echo graphic artist has walked away with the top prize in a national cartoonist competition.

Matt Buck, 29, scooped the 18-30 category in the fifth annual Mel Calman Young Cartoonist of the Year Award.

His prize of £1,000 was presented to him at the Royal Institution in London's Mayfair.

The competition was run by the British Cartoon Association and judges included top national cartoonists Steve Bell of the Guardian, Peter Brookes of The Times, and Posey Simmons of The Guardian.

Chairman of the British Cartoon Association Martin Rowson was clearly impressed with Matt's work.

He said: "Matt's cartoon was almost Calman-esque in its humour and artwork and keeps up the golden tradition of British cartooning."

Matt, a freelance graphic artist, of Staple Gardens, Winchester, said: "I am delighted with the award.

"I started entering competitions five years ago and came runner-up a couple of times but now I have cracked it, which is a good job, as I have reached the age limit!"
