A FAMILY was evacuated when a dressing-gown drying on a heater started a fire in their Gosport flat.
The couple with two toddlers left their flat at Hillary Court in Nimrod Drive, Rowner, when the portable gas heater filled the lounge with smoke.
Three fire service appliances and a turntable ladder were needed at the third-floor flat on Tuesday night. Minor smoke damage was caused and no one was hurt, said leading fire fighter Jim Buck, of Gosport fire service - "But there could have been a problem," he said. "Luckily the smoke alerted the parents, so they could get out before things got serious."
He said the heater was also poorly maintained and poisonous fumes might have been "especially dangerous during the night when they were sleeping.''
