Godspell, Chichester Festival Theatre

THE MUSICAL extravaganza that launched the careers of David Essex, Jeremy Irons and Marti Webb in the 1970s has been given a hip, modern feel in this latest revival.

The production is full of energy and laughter, with the cast providing strong solo and choral performances in the musical based on the New Testament story that had the audience's toes tapping.

But if the idea of "happy-clappy" religion puts you off, think again, because Godspell concentrates on the values of treating others well and not turning to violence, wider messages that ensure the whole audience can feel involved.

With the show set on a rock stage and constant references to current culture, from Ali G to a Jerry Springer-style telling of the parable of the prodigal son, even the most reluctant teenager is sure to enjoy the gags.

Godspell runs until January 7.
