WINCHESTER MP Mark Oaten is putting pressure on the government for all new-born babies to be tested for deafness.

He claims the current health visitor distraction test is not good enough and wants the government to commit itself to a national screening system.

"Out of 840 children born deaf in the UK every year, the current health visitor distraction test will miss 400 by 18 months of age and 200 by the age of three-and-a-half," he said.

A recent MORI poll revealed that there was public support for the introduction of hearing screening for all new-born babies.

Mr Oaten has sponsored a notion of motion on the issue, which has already been signed by 69 MPs.
