American internet giant AOL is pushing ahead with its plan to bring US-style unmetered access to the high street with a new deal with Woolworths-to-B&Q retailer Kingfisher.

AOL UK will distribute copies of its AOL software through more than 2,000 Comet, B&Q, Woolworths and Superdrug stores.

The company, the world's largest Internet company, is inching towards completing its merger with Time Warner in the United States.

It allows Internet users unlimited access for a fixed fee of £14.99 a month, with no extra charges for subscription or phone calls.

Under the deal with Kingfisher, the software for AOL's unmetered service will be given away in 795 Woolworth, 705 Superdrug and 260 Comet stores later this month.

The CDs, which can also be picked up in Asda supermarket branches, will be handed out in 301 B&Q stores from early February.

Under the deal, AOL will also promote B&Q's range of home and garden goods on its online shopping channels, including its CompuServe and Netscape Online services.

The move also boosts the online presence of Kingfisher.

The company is in the process of splitting its electrical and DIY division, including B&Q and Comet, from its Woolworth and Superdrug stores.
