'TOTAl embarrassment' was how New Street's Sunday team manager Andy Kidney summed up his feelings after his side's 12-2 home drubbing by Shipton pub side Boot Inn in the ADSL at the weekend. "I never thought that any team I managed could be beaten by such a score," he said.

He added that he was also bitterly disappointed at the players who once again failed to turn up. "We had a team boasting 15 players on Saturday night but only started with 10 and consequently were always fighting a losing battle." Despite starting brightly, Street went 3-0 down before a great strike from Sam Rea made it 3-1 but he was sent off a few minutes later and, despite the late appearance of another player, the 10-man Street were trailing 6-1 at half time.

Despite an enterprising second goal from Dean Bowden, Glen Vesey's Boot added a further six goals in the second half with some clinical finishing, particularly from Andy Haynes, and the whole of the Boot back line, and a deflated Kidney admitted afterwards that he had a lot of things to think about over the Christmas and New Year break.

The win put Boot on top of the first division table as previous leaders Ludgershall were on cup duty. They won through to the next round of the North Hants Sunday Senior Cup with a 4-3 away win in extra time against Basingstoke League side Soldiers Return.

There was little joy for the other first division sides on cup duty with Wherwell crashing 11-1 in the county senior cup, Milton Lilbourne losing 11-0 in the North Hants Cup and Barton Stacey, not for the first time this season, going to the wire before losing to Overton MI from the Basingstoke League in a penalty shoot out.

Level at 4-4 at the end of 90 minutes; Roger Purdue and Andy Meighan's Cross Country Couriers backed Barton Stacey, playing on the council pitches at Walworth, were left to rue a number of missed chances. They led on three occasions but Overton added salt to the ADSL side's frustration by forcing extra time with an injury-time equaliser.

The extra half hour had a similar climax with Barton Stacey leading only to succumb to another injury-time equaliser. Barton Stacey scorers during open play were Matt Belbin (2), Dave Pyle and Chris Iddles and an own goal but in the penalty decider two misses ensured Overton ensured that the visitiors went through to the next round.

The ADSL did however have some cup success with second division side SAS winning through to the fourth round of the Hants Junior 'B' Cup with an excellent 3-1 away win against Yarmouth & Larscombe.

Back on the league scene, Perry Cocking's Vernham Labels missed out again when second met third in division two - losing 2-0 at home to Blaizers - and Twining continued their revival with a 4-2 away win against Wyke Down.

Andover Saints scrambled to the top of the third division with a narrow 4-3 home win against Bishops Argyle, Thruxton got back into the promotion hunt with a 5-1 spanking of bottom club Abbots Mitre but Barton Stacey Res had a disappointing end to the year when crashing 6-2 at home to Dave Millward's Leisure Centre - after being two goals up in the first half hour through Nic Turpin.

The top two in the fourth division have opened an eight-point gap over their nearest rivals. Leaders CAE Ludgershall won for the eighth time with a 5-3 home win against Wolversdene while second placed Bell Inn, with a game in hand, beat third placed SWCS Andover with plenty to spare in a 5-0 rout.
