WITH the first team out of action, it was time for Southampton men's second side to step into the spotlight - and they did it in style with a 9-0 win over United Services.

They opened their account after 12 minutes when a short corner was converted by Eric Holt and that burst the floodgates with Holt and Neil Hutchinson collecting hat-tricks. Chris Stokes added a brace and John Freckleton one.

A solitary strike from Bill Stokes was the only present being handed out by Woking in their friendly with Southampton Masters, who lost out 1-3.

The vets enjoyed another good win over Andover with Pete Terry (3), Martin Woods and Chris Jones getting on the scoresheet.

In a humdinger of a game between the fourths and City of Portsmouth, the score ended 6-4 in Southampton's favour thanks to strikes from Mike Woods (2) and singles from Ed Thorn, Dominic Gordon, Andy Whiteside and Ed Matthews. The Otters went down to Winchester 2-0.

It was third time lucky for the sixth team as they managed to overcome a Fareham side on their third meeting. Keeper Paul Newman had a good game, blotting out the Fareham attack. Adam Knight got Southampton's goal in the second half.

On Sunday, Southampton's under-12s lost 1-0 to Hamble in the dying seconds of their coaching game.

And, without key county players, the under-16 boys went down 7-0 to Farnborough in the Hampshire Cup.
