RAIL services on the Waterloo to Southampton line were getting back to normal today after the chaos caused by Monday's freight derailment at Eastleigh.

A Railtrack spokesman said: "The line to London was open as normal this morning so there will no problems for people commuting.''

The line to Southampton was reopened at 8.30 am.

Rail gangs worked through the night to repair the damage.

The spokesman added: "A new set of points have been put in and these have had to be finely tuned."

The 50-container Freightliner train was derailed late Monday night. Railtrack bosses said the accident caused major damage to a 60-foot stretch of points and track engineers worked non-stop to rectify the situation.

A spokesman for the company said: "The serious damage to a set of points was a big job.'' The overturned wagon was lifted off the track yesterday afternoon and an investigation has been launched into the accident.

Rail haulage bosses today confirmed that aerosols and resin-laced grout was being carried in the rear of the train.

But they say the wagon that overturned and the two others that were derailed contained no dangerous materials.

Government inspectors were called to the scene and the wagon has taken to the Freight-liner's repair depot in Millbrook, Southampton.

The company is to carry out its own investigation into the accident that has initially been put down to a faulty axle bearing.

Freightliner's corporate communications manager Alison Brawn said: "I must emphasise that it is only first investigations that are suggesting the axle bearing.

"The Railway Inspectorate has been at the scene and it will depend on its view what investigations are undertaken."
