A GROUP of Hampshire musicians are drumming up support for a world record bid in Southampton next summer.

They hope to ensnare as many as possible to play the dhol drums at a special event.

The current record stands at 314 musicians who played the dhol drums in the West Midlands last year.

But the new attempt, led by drumming group the Southampton Dholis, hopes to beat that out of sight.

Organiser John Singh Roath, a community worker at the city's Gurdwara Singh Sabha, said: "We've got about 20 drummers at the moment and we are hoping to get another 330 to join. We want people from across the city to join in and show what a culturally diverse city Southampton is. We want to play for at least half an hour to break the record; it's there to be broken and we want to do it here in Southampton."

He hoped the event will help raise money for charity and said: "All the guys we have got so far are from Southampton but we hope to get others to join in from around the country. The greater goal of it is to bring kids together from all backgrounds and give them something they can look back on in 20 years' time and say 'I did that'. "We want girls to join in as well and although it will be mainly for the youth, others can help out."
