SAINTS boss Glenn Hoddle has thrown down a challenge to two-goal hero James Beattie, writes John May.
Hoddle has worked with some of the game's great strikers, both as a club manager and England coach, and, after Beattie repaid his recall to the colours with two goals, Hoddle challenged him to continue to improve his game.
"I think he can get better and better and become a very good striker," said Hoddle. "He's got a good base to his game, if he can sort out a lot of things which are going on out on the pitch and get his head up at times.
"He's got a fantastic leap which can turn a poorish ball into a good one, and he's a great team player with an awareness for the team."
Beattie has not been a regular under Hoddle and the Saints boss said: "I think he has got a lot to learn as a player and he's had his fair share of injuries at key moments.
"James has been patient and waited for this chance. I gave him a chance last year when I came here after about three or four games at Highbury but he got an horrendous ankle injury that put him out for four months.
"He's had his share of blows on the injury front but he's come in and he will always give you everything he's got."
