FURIOUS taxi and private hire drivers look set to bring Southampton to a standstill today with a protest that will see them driving at a snail's pace through the city centre.
About 100 drivers are expected to take part in the protest that will kick off from midday.
A cavalcade comprising taxis and private hire cars will makes its way into the city centre along the Millbrook bypass and head for WestQuay shopping centre, before driving slowly round the city.
The demonstration is being made as a protest against changes to the rules and regulations governing the city's taxi and private hire trade. The action is a bid to make the public aware of the changes that the taxi drivers say will bring confusion to city dwellers.
At 11pm, drivers working in the city will leave the streets for a lightning protest and gather in the Toys R Us car park.
"We do not want to lose the trust of the public so we will only withdraw from the streets for a while from 11pm," explained Clive Johnson, chairman of Southampton Taxi and Private Hire Association.
