KEVIN DAVIES admits confidence is sagging as Saints strike force looks for a way to end a goal drought that is starting to rack up alarming proportions.
Wednesday night's extra-time Worthington Cup exit at the hands of Coventry means it's now 315 minutes since Saints last hit the back of the onion bag.
And they face a tough task to end that goal drought, with Chelsea visiting The Dell tomorrow.
Although injuries meant Davies was withdrawn into a midfield role in midweek, he accepts his share of the blame dished out to those expected to fire the goals.
"I haven't scored in a long time but there's no excuse. We're picked and paid to score the goals," said Davies.
Even Saints' last goal in the 1-1 draw at Everton came frrom defender Jason Dodd and Davies concedes the strikers run the risk of being caught in a downward spiral.
"Because we're not scoring goals we're a bit tense and nervous in front of goal, and perhaps we're snatching at things. We're expected to do the job but there's a lack of confidence at the moment with myself and a few of the other players.
"It's a hard job to keep the confidence up but that's what the staff are going to have to try and do, not let the heads drop.
"We are creating chances but we're not putting them away and that means one goal is enough to beat us.
"We need something to turn it round a bit of luck, a goal in off somebody's backside or something like that. We've had five good chances and, if we had scored one of them, we would have gone on to win the game.
But Davies insists:"There's no panic. The spirit has always been good here from my point of view. We've just got to keep our heads up and crack on.
"We've been playing quite well but not getting the results. we've tried to change things by going a little bit more direct and we looked quite comfortable at the back again, but they got the one chance which went in.
"We're trying to find the right balance and the way we're going to play.
"We've got another big game tomorrow and it's going to be a big test of character for some people."
