A TOP six finish in the recent Canon European Under-21 Championship at Royal St George's in Sandwich capped another successful season for Hampshire women's champion Kirsty Taylor.

The Sandford Springs girl was disappointed with her fifth place at Royal St George's after sharing the first round lead with Rebecca Hudson, who went on to win the title which Kirsty herself won two years ago.

Highlight of Taylor's season was becoming the first English amateur for several years to qualify for the Weetabix British Open at Royal Birkdale. She finished top amateur in the event but didn't make the cut.

That was something she rectified when she qualified for the last two days of the Chart Hills Classic European Tour event. She made the cut in 43rd place with 80 professional players behind her.

Kirsty has ambitions to turn professional but admits she needs at least another year in the amateur ranks. The 21-year-old from Overton has shown real promise in several events this summer.

She was went round in four under par at The Berkshire to win the Astor Salver then reeled off scores of four under and five under to win the Harper Trophy at Bath.

Then she produced her best performance in a national major, equalling the course record of six under at Walton Heath to qualify for the British Amateur Matchplay Championship in which she went on to reach the quarter-finals.

She played for England five times and was in the under-21 squad which came back from the European Championships in Italy with a silver medal.
