EVOCATIVE Irish music flows into The Brook next week when accordionist Sharon Shannon plays a set of acoustic folk, with her band The Woodchoppers on Wednesday 1st November.
Hailing from Clare, on the west coast of Ireland, an area historically steeped in music, Sharon has been a musician since she was a child. She was still only in her teens when asked to provide the music for Jim Sheridan's stage production of Brendan Behan's play The Hostage.
She went on to become one of the most celebrated folk artists of the 1990s. Her first album, a cocktail of Portuguese, Cajun, Swedish, Scottish and French-Canadian influences, became the most successful traditional music album ever released. Further solo releases followed plus an appearance on EMI's Common Ground project alongside such luminaries as Bono, Elvis Costello, Kate Bush and Mark Knopfler.
Recently, Sharon Shannon and The Woodchoppers have toured extensively in the US and Europe, also visiting Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan.
Sharon has also become a firm favourite on the summer festival circuit, both in the UK and abroad. Wednesday's gig at The Brook with her band is her second visit to the venue. Advance tickets can be booked through 023 8055 5366.
