Pirelli General kept their Premier Division title aspirations simmering away on a day when most of the Hampshire League programme disappeared under a deluge of rain on Saturday.

Chestnut Avenue stood up well to the watery attack and second-half goals from Paul Beesley and Tim Wallis - he scored within a minute of coming on as substitute - set up Cablemakers for a 2-0 win over Amesbury.

It extended Pirelli's unbeaten run to six games.

Over at Woolston, Vosper Thornycroft looked set to prolong their impressive record as they went into half-time a Stuart Brown penalty up on Bishop's Waltham. But the referee, concerned that the lines were disappearing under the water, called it off there and then.

Ringwood battled to get their pitch fit for the visit of Horndean and wished they hadn't. They gave away a needless penalty, converted by Spencer Hall, early on, then allowed Horndean to nip in for a second with the second-half in its infancy. James Antell pulled one back but 'Dean hung on for a 2-1 victory.

Aldermaston had influential midfielder John Rooney sent off for disputing a penalty early in their game with Brading - and paid dearly. It was 1-1 at the time but by half time Brading had raced off into a 5-1 lead. They won 6-3 eventually with Steve Neary (2) and Dave Horrix the Aldermaston scorers.

Winchester City were 3-1 ahead against Hayling in Division 1 when a downpour caused the referee to abandon the game with just nine minutes left. City, whose goals came from Darren Turner, Kevin Tugwell and Paul Nelson, hope the result will be allowed to stand.

Paulsgrove beat Clanfield 5-4 with Ray Tyrell and Jay Shepherd scoring against their old club. Wayne Johnson got two, his second deciding it in the last five minutes. Castle scored three times in the last ten minutes to salvage a 3-3 draw at Micheldever.

Alresford's backroom staff prepared their pitch superbly for the Division 2 game with Compton and the players repaid them with a 4-0 victory - Gary Bennett, Mark O'Rourke, Danny Couchman and Grant Young doing the business. Dean Austin forced the own goal which gave Broughton a well-earned point against Hamble Club (Robbie Cooke).
