A group of 20-somethings meet one night in an abandoned house. Gathering round a ouija board for a laugh they soon find themselves conjuring up the kind of ghost they hadn't bargained for.
The five friends are a mixed bunch that include an estate agent, a teacher, a dolled-up clubber, a drop-out and a clean-cut sportsman.
The estate agent, Dan has "borrowed" the keys of an empty property from his employers after discovering that a child who once lived in the house claimed to have seen a ghost in the cellar.
Once gathered at the table, their conversation starts out with the usual jokey banter, but it soon emerges that there really was a dark and sinister presence.
Styled along the lines of slasher movies like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, but with dealing with a serious topical theme, this production from the Southampton University Theatre Group ends with a twist in the tale.
The Dark is an original script written by, as yet unpublished, writer Joseph H Gibbons who was discovered at this year's Edinburgh Festival by the play's director Simon Williams, a film studies undergraduate at Southampton University.
Although set in a child's bedroom, The Dark is an adult story and, because of strong language and the subject matter, is not suitable for children.
The Dark by Southampton University Theatre Group is at the Talking Heads, October 29 - November 1. Tickets are just £3.50 or £4 and are available on the night from Talking Heads.
