Linden Homes Southern has won planning permission for a major housing scheme in Hyde Street, Winchester. The 47 houses will go up on the site of the former main Ford dealership, Evans Halshaw and will be called Silchester Gate, since it stands on the ancient Roman road to Silchester. It will be mixed, with 12 three-storey town houses, 18 two-bedroom apartments, 14 social housing flats and three two-storey flats. Prices will range from £160,000 to £400,000. First occupations will be in August next year. "We are confident they will be in great demand, like those we built in Queen's Court in Peninsula Barracks," said MD, Pat Feighery. "Their position, a short walk to the station and the city centre is a tremendous benefit." Archaeological work over five to six weeks may halt demolition work temporarily. Totton-based Linden Homes has been successful at identifying potential brownfield development, like the former Eagle Hotel, Winchester, which was converted into apartments, while the front facade was kept. Queen's Court was in huge demand, with some houses sold before being built. One £600,000 home is going up on an old brickworks site at Warsash and a £750,000 house is taking shape at Chilworth .
