IT was a night of shocks in the first round of the Russell Cotes Cup as own goals gave Hampshire League sides Pirelli General and Lymington Town prized Wessex League scalps.

The biggest upset was at Western Way where Bemerton own goals by Paul Spiller, after 85 minutes, and Darren Harding, late in extra-time, gave Pirelli a 2-1 success.

Lymington Town also sprang a surprise at Downton where they trailed 2-0 and 3-1 to efforts from Matt Guy (2) and Thorne, but Dave Perrett (25), Biggott (79) and Gary Parrett (84) put them back on terms and a 90th minute own goal clinched them a 4-3 passage.

Goals from Matty Town (2), Paul Rideout, Nigel Mottashed and Leigh Phillips prevented any upset as JWL leaders Lymington & New Milton beat West Wight Mayflower 5-1 and Totton napped Whitchurch 5-2.

Jamie Brown and Tommy Pegler were on target as BAT ousted Andover 2-0 and first-half efforts from Mark Taylor, Mark Jones and an own goal saw Brockenhurst triumph 3-0 over Hamble ASSC.

Another own goal settled the Wiltshire Premier Shield first round clash as Salisbury struggled past Chippenham 1-0.

Sub Tyronne Bowers, on for the concussed Roger Emms, saw his 22nd minute shot deflected into his own net by Nathan Rudge. A Darren Lush handball presented Chippenham with a 49th minute penalty which Ian Murphy blazed over.

Basingstoke Town held their nerve to win a penalty shoot-out 4-2 at Carshalton in the Ryman Full Members' Cup after the teams had been deadlocked 3-3.

A Richard Newbery penalty and Sean Gorman wiped out the home side's early lead only for a late leveller to send the tie into overtime. Carshalton moved ahead again but a Clint Bassett volley forced the shoot-out.

Stockbridge keeper Steve Whitcher kept Havant & Waterlooville at bay until the brink of half-time in their Hampshire Senior Cup first round meeting. A Matt Jones header gave H&W the lead and Dean Blake, Neil Champion and Dave Wakefield sealed the Westleigh Park club a 4-0 win.

Fleet Town go third in the JWL after Gavin Smith (2), Martin Whiddett and Lewis Field sealed a 4-2 success over Portsmouth RN who now prop up the pack following Swanage's (Kevin Gill) 1-1 draw at Gosport (Jon Wallsgrove). Late goals from Richard Grist and Jon Norris gave Thatcham a 2-0 verdict at Bournemouth while Berkshire neighbours Newbury floored Fareham 4-0 through Darke (2), Cushnahan and Alleyne.

BASHLEY have failed to extend striker Robert Speakman's loan from Exeter ahead of tonight's Dr Martens Eastern Division home showdown with Burnham.

Fit-again Roy Young is set to resume frontline duty in the first of two Bash games against lowly opposition. Bash visit Dartford on Saturday.

Newport striker Steve Tate sits out the last of a three-match ban at Dartford where the Islanders bid for a third straight Eastern Division win.
