A HAMPSHIRE police officer who spent 68 days in a Yugoslav jail after being branded a spy has been hailed as a true ambassador for his force.

Det Sgt Adrian Prangnell was greeted with rousing applause as special guest at Hampshire Police Federation's annual meeting in Winchester last night.

Federation chairman Alan Gordon told him: "Throughout your ordeal you conducted yourself with dignity.

"You wer,e and still are, a tribute to this force, a tribute to the office of constable and a true ambassador for the police service."

The 41-year-old from Soberton was arrested by the Yugoslav army on August 1 near the border of Montenegro and Kosovo.
