PUB GOERS hoping for a quiet drink yesterday lunchtime were in for a shock.

As they walked through the doors of Southampton's Grog and Sausage they were confronted with the bizarre sight of two models grappling in a mountain of moist mash.

The craze that has swept America - mashed potato wrestling - finally made its debut in the UK and Fareham-based models Tammy Nico and Sarah Nash were first in the queue.

Sarah, 25, said: "It was very wet, and very cold but I would definitely have another go at it.

"The potato got everywhere and was squeaking between my toes, but I still enjoyed it."

The spud-tacular event was organised by the British Potato Council to promote the versatile vegetable.

Grog and Sausage manager Peter Kelly said: "Because we specialise in sausage and mash, the potato council thought that we would be a good venue.

"I immediately thought it was a good idea and I think it's an excellent thing.

"I think it could well take on over here, but I can assure customers that we won't be serving this mash with their sausages!"

BPC spokeswoman Kathryn Trivett said the tour would be taken round the country.

"We hope mashed potato wrestling will become as big here as it is in the USA," she said.

"It is hilarious fun for spectators and contestants alike, and a good crowd puller.

"We always knew the potato was versatile, but this event give the phrase a whole new meaning."

Yesterday's wrestlers had to remove their jackets before entering the makeshift ring, which was made from reject potato flakes.

"The only drawback about mashed potato wrestling is that you need to be washed down afterwards, so you do need to wear suitable clothing," said Kathryn.
