THE quarter-finals of a national inter-club tennis tournament will feature a team from the Hampshire Tennis & Health Club.
The AT Kearney Inter-Club Challenge is for players who have not played for their county team for at least five years. It features one men's doubles and one ladies' doubles with the match decided on a mixed doubles if the scores are tied.
The Hampshire club, who started off with a 2-0 win over a Totally Tennis team, edged through to the last eight with a 2-1 victory against Margate Tennis Club. They will have to play that match before November 19.
Adam Smith and Lyn Skerret were needed to settle the tie, which they did 7-6 6-3 against Margate's B Mileham and K Mileham.
That win came after a 5-7, 3-6, 2-6 success for Liz Burge and Skerret against L Giles and K Mileham and a 3-6, 6-2, 2-6 defeat for Mark Jackson, the Hampshire Club's tennis pro, and Smith against B Mileham and N Taylor.
The Hampshire Club's ladies' A team got off to a storming start in the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Doubles League with a 9-0 win over Littleton without dropping a set. The Ladies B team beat Romsey A 5-3.
Romsey's Catherine Gunn has qualified to tennis.net Sunday Telegraph Junior Grand Prix Final, which is being staged in Boco Raton, Florida.
The talented 17-year-old (below) qualified for the final by gaining ranking points at junior tournaments held during the summer, and she will compete in the under-18 age group.
Gunn attends Peter Symonds College in Winchester and plays her tennis at both the Hampshire Club and Winchester Tennis Club. The Hampshire number one, she is ranked in the top ten nationally at under-17 level.
At the national championships, the teenager has reached the quarter-finals of both the under-14 and under-16 singles and doubles. She has made the last 16 of the under-18 singles for the last two years, and the quarter-finals in the doubles.
Gunn has reached the junior Grand Prix finals before, making the under-14 final, and then last year getting to the semi-finals in the under-18 age group.
