POLICE are appealing for witnesses to an accident that left a Totton pensioner critically ill in hospital.
The crash happened at a Totton junction that has been the scene of several accidents in the past few years.
A Renault 19, driven by a 70-year-old man, was travelling south along Pauletts Lane. It was in collision with a Peugeot 306 travelling east along Loperwood.
The Renault ended up on its roof at the side of the road.
Police say the driver was trapped for half-an-hour before being freed by Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and taken to Southampton General Hospital. "He suffered serious head and back injuries and is currently in the intensive care unit, where his condition is described as critical," said police.
The Peugeot was driven by a 44-year-old woman, also from Totton, who was treated for shock and bruising.
The crash happened at 3pm on Wednesday. Anyone who witnessed the accident should ring the traffic unit at Lyndhurst police station on 0845 045 4545 and ask for Pc John Cleverley.
