STUDENTS were warned to be vigilant today after a sneak thief crept into university halls of residence in Southampton and rifled through bags.
Nine different people fell victim to the intruder, who struck at Stone-ham House in Wessex Lane, Swaythling, on Wednesday.
Police are hunting two men who were confronted by staff at the premises.
Southampton Central crimedesk spokeswoman Helen Ward said one was white, aged 17 to 20, average build, clean shaven with short ginger hair and wearing a dark blue padded jacket.
The second was of mixed race, aged 17 to 20, 6ft tall, clean-shaven, wearing a cream baseball cap and navy blue jacket with cream sleeves.
It is believed the two men may have tricked their way into the building between 10.45am and noon, when some of the occupants left their bags in a communal area while they went outside.
Police today reminded students to be on their guard, keep a close eye on their possessions and report any suspicious characters seen hanging around their accommodation.
